Sohlzenitsysn

Alexander Sohlzenitsyn is dead. Alas, a mere forty-six years too late--otherwise, he would have died a great man.

Instead of dying as the tyrant Stalin's enemy, he died the tyrant Putin's ally.

As I said, alas.

  1. Can you elaborate? I realize I'm supposed to know who this guy is, but I don't know much about him. I know the titles of some books but I've never read them, etc.

And your post was the first I've seen saying he wussed out in later years. Can you explain?

  2. While always a critic of Stalinism, Sohlzenitsyn he also opposed American capitalism.

He said something like the problem with the East is that everything is run by the state, and the problem with the West was that everything is run by commerce.

In the end, he was little more than a Russian ultra-nationalist whose last opus seemed to echo the anti-semitism of the Tsarist era.
